Parish Life 2009:
Establishing a New Commitment for our Future

We are Ss Peter & Paul
We are Ss Peter & Paul
We are Ss Peter & Paul

Our parish was founded in 1907 and has served as the Mother Church of Orthodoxy in Michigan, spawning many other parishes of various ethnic backgrounds over its rich 101 year history.

We have had many wonderful years raising generations of families in the Glory of God, with Love, and as a Community; but like any other family, we have seen our share of challenging and desperate times, as well.

On November 30, 2008, we had our first New Commitment Core Group Meeting as we strive again as a people who are working very hard to bring our church back to health and prosperity.

Subjects that we have been addressing include:

Coming to Church as often as we can and participating in the Sacraments.

What our commitments should include, and our Stewardship List.

How can we make people feel welcome when they visit.

How can we get our Family and Friends to come and visit.

What are we teaching our children - influencing good impressions.

How can we make our parish community strong in our social life?

Can church be fun, too?

.

We work really hard in order to come up with ideas on how to work together and grow as a parish, and by the Glory of God, it has been Great!

Cookies with Santa 2009

The Cookie Buffet

The Cookie Buffet

Our Cookies with Santa event was moved to the upper level of our Cultural Center in 2009.  The dance floor was used to create what many called "Santa's fantasy land."  The display was made of many lighted Santa status, animated and lighted reindeer, and lots of Christmas trees.  Santa and his elf sat in the center, greeting all the neighborhood children.

The event was a great success!  We had to bring out more tables and chairs to accommodate the crowd.  So many children from the neighborhood came that Santa had to send one of his elves (Vera Brewer) to get more toys!

Chrismas Raffle

While the kids enjoyed visiting with Santa and eating cookies, a Christmas Raffle entertained the adults.  Nearly 40 prizes were on display in the raffle.  Tickets could be purchased for just $ .25.  Prizes ranged in value from $ 1 to $50.  Participants were able to place as many tickets as they wanted - into the bag for the prize of their choice.  Tickets were pulled out of each bag at 2PM.  Most participants stayed until the end of the drawing to claim their prizes.  Those who left early were contacted by phone, and collected their prize at a later date.

2ND ANNUAL SOUPERBOWL SUNDAY - February 7, 2010

Everyone enjoyed the food during our 2nd annual Souperbowl event.

FORGIVENESS SUNDAY AND BLINI - February 14, 2010

On Forgiveness Sunday many attend Forgiveness Vespers.  This service marks the beginning of Great Lent. They hear on the Lord's teaching about fasting and forgiveness and enter the season of the fast forgiving one another so that God will forgive them. If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you your trespasses (Matthew 6:14).

After the dismissal at Vespers, the faithful come up one by one and venerate the icon, after which each asks the priest for forgiveness.  Each parishioner takes a place in the aisle to give and receive forgiveness from each-other.  It is a wonderful way to start the fasting season and New Year.

After the Divine Liturgy and Forgiveness Vespers, we all went over to the Cultural Center for the traditional Blini brunch.  Many thanks go out to Lisa Franks for making the Blini batter.  She followed a traditional recipe and allowed the batter to rise the night before. (You’ll have to ask her about that…) There were many others that helped prepare the food – Liza Salowich-Palm, Marge Salowich, and Bill & Tia Earp.  Tia did an excellent job of cooking the Blini!  Maria Earp and Liza Salowich-Palm also did a wonderful job preparing the tables in the dining room.  Let’s also give praise to Devern Brewer, who is so often found helping with the clean-up and dishes.

March Family Dinner

Greg Popoff
Greg Popoff
Greg Popoff

On Sunday, March 15, 2009, our Monthly Family Dinner was sponsored by Greg Popoff and his Family, and it was a huge success.  Please pray for the health of his family for helping our church in so many ways.

On the Lenten menu was a whole wheat spaghetti served with a choice of a red spaghetti sauce with mushrooms and vegetables or a spiced flavored Olive Oil, green salad, and fresh garlic bread.  The dessert table featured several fuuits and even some cookies.  About 40 people enjoyed the meal as many came back for seconds.

A special Thank You goes out to Bill Earp who made a delicious spaghetti dish of his own for everyone to enjoy, and for all of the help cleaning up.

Holy Pascha - 2009

As we prepared (as a group) for our Holy Pascha, many of us made promises to ourselves and each other to be better people, better neighbors, better community and most of all: a better church.  The journey we traveled was long, but meaningful, and we have so many things to be thankful for as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

We started at Forgiveness Vespers, and made every effort to do everything we could to inspire and grow, whether it was attending the Divine Liturgy on Sundays, Reader's Service on Wednesdays; giving to the poor, participating in functions and events, or just cleaning up when we needed it done.  Everybody was there in some capacity, and Fr Alexandru Partioc led us on a freshly inspired road full of love and caring for ourselves and all around us.

I have prepared a very nice story in pictures of our lives at the Cathedral during Great Lent - culminating with an absolutely wonderful, inspirational, emotional Holy Pascha.

Christ Is Risen!  Indeed He is Risen!

Come all you faithful, let us venerate the Holy Resurrection of Christ.

For behold, through the Cross joy has come to all the world.  Ever praising the Lord, let us praise His Resurrection.

For by enduring the Cross for us, He has destroyed death by death!

Cleaning the Church and Grounds for Pascha

On March 28th, over 25 people came down to help clean up the church and grounds.

Outside, the weather allowed us to edge, rake, sweep and clean up the entire property (including the parking lot and alley) before the rain washed everything for us; and inside Patricia Bowser actually went up into the rafters (with ladders, steps and planks) to lower the chandelier so that we could clean and change bulbs (a big feat in itself).  Check out the photos she was able to take from there.

Thank you to everyone, especially the kids, who showed up (and Rick, you still owe me a lunch).

Pysanky - A true Pascha Art

When preparing for Pascha, one of the more fun traditional customs is to make Pysanky.

This true artform takes many years to master, however for the first (and few) timers, it is a challenge to get it right.  You actually write on a raw egg with hot wax and a stylus, dipping it into several different colors as you go along.

Sonia Boyar was kind enough to share her talents, and with the help of some of her family members, was able to demonstrate and coach over 50 people, and 32 folks were able to take home their new souvenir.

Preparing for Palm Sunday and Holy Week

With so many things to do to get ready for Holy Week, we needed to recruit a lot of volunteers.  Here is a short list of some of the people who helped make a difference for Palm Sunday through Holy Pascha.  My only regret is that we didn't take more photographs of the so many other people who stepped up when needed.

On Palm Sunday, we had a lot of things going on.

First, it was our Monthly Family Dinner sponsored by Emmanual "Keith" Qualls, and he planned a very nice event.  The menu included Baked Cod, with French Fries and Onion Rings.  He made a special Turnip and Collard Greens dish, and Breaded Mushrooms.  For dessert, he located some "dairy free" sherbert, which was a hit with everyone.

Nancy Abick took the time and effort to create an entire table full of Pascha crafts, and had them ready to display and sell.  With some help from Marilyn, she was able to keep up with demand, and almost sold out.

Vera Brewer spearheaded a Pascha Bake, and had several loaves of Pascha Kulich for sale at the Ladies Altar Guild's Bake Sale.  The bread looked really great and was gone before you knew it.  In fact, the women did very well at the table.

It was a huge event, and we were ready for one of our biggest groups of people in a very long time - And Everyone had a Great Time!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this day so powerful!

RUMMAGE SALE WAS HUGE SUCCESS!
Our Rummage Sale (hosted by our parish) was held in the Ss Peter and Paul Orthodox Cultural Community Center lower level at the end of May .

THIS EVENT WAS HUGE!

Our Chairwoman, Jennie Mich has outdone herself with this project and we were all excited as the church realized a benefit upwards of 1500.00 (in just 2 days); and also hearing so many people from the neighborhood exclaim their delight that we were back.
.
Thank you to so many people who have collected their stuff and got it down here.

It is still not too late to get into your attics, basements and garages.  We will begin collecting clothing items, blankets and bedding, games and toys, housewares, books, furniture, tools, and everything very soon for our next event in the Fall.  If you need help getting it here, please call or e-mail the church office to make arrangements for someone to come pick it up.

MAY FAMILY DINNER - A FIRST CLASS EVENT
Our May Family Dinner, sponsored by the Earp Family, was a First Class Dinner.  Please pray for their health - They help the Cathedral in so many ways!

On the menu was a quality tasty Lemon Chicken Breast served with Rotini (with homemade Pesto), Fresh Green Beans (with sundried Tomatoes and Almonds), a special Tossed Salad and Fresh Bread. and for dessert, fresh brownies.  Everyone enjoyed a real Great Meal on a real Special Day at our Church.
.
We had many special guests attend, and everyone had a great time.  Our president, Kathy Sedor also led a real positive dialog about our past 6 months, and we were able to structure many great ideas for our future.  Bottom Line:  Everything is going great!

PENTECOST:  BIRTHDAY PARTY - LET'S CELEBRATE

On Sunday, June 7, 2009 we celebrated a Major Holy Day in our Church.  Pentecost (40 days after Pascha) is considered the birthday of the Orthodox Faith, and we wanted to celebrate it in fine fashion.
.

After praying (the kneeling prayers) in church, we had a gigantic Birthday Party for our ENTIRE PARISH!  Whether our special day was in January or July, or any of the months between, we celebrated at our table with a special cake especially made for us by Tanya Dely and her family.
.
Each month had a special theme, and everyone had a great time whether they were at their table or snuck over to someone else's.

CHURCH SCHOOL
Our Church School came to a grand completion with a Graduation Commencement on June 14th after the Divine Liturgy.  There were several awards and acknowledgements for our children, and after commencement, they were models for some really great photographs taken by their teacher, and our local expert photographer, Christine Trojan.  (Those photos will be posted shortly on this site.)

Congratulations to all of our children - They did a great job this year, and a special Thank you to Christine and Vera Brewer for putting together a wonderful program for their life long learning.

THE JUNE FAMILY DINNER - A MEXICAN FIESTA

Our Monthly Family Dinner for June was held on the 14th, and was sponsored by the Nino Family.

They started very early Sunday morning to make sure that everything was as fresh as possible.  The menu included a Mexican Fried Chicken Breast with a choice of white or Spanish rice (or both), Cowboy Beans, Tossed Green salad and special chips and homemade salsa at each table.

Everyone marveled at how great everything was, and we were pleasantly surprised when saw a very special guest come in.

They worked especially hard, and were very patient teaching many of our guests much of the food traditions in their culture.  Please pray for Luis and Araceli and their beautiful children.

Our Church Picnic – Very Nice!

.

On Sunday, July 19th, our Church Council along with the Ss Peter and Paul Cultural Community Center sponsored a little Church Picnic in the School Courtyard under an absolutely Beautiful Summer Sky - The weather was perfect!

.

Our Men did everything to make a nice intimate setting by putting up a couple of canopies/tents with lots of tables and chairs, barbecued a lot of hamburgers, hot dogs and brats with some salads and popsicles for everyone!

The kids had a great time at their own table, playing music, and some very interesting tricycle races in the hallway.

Special Thank Yous to Luis Nino, Keith Qualls and Victor Pruchniewski for setting everything up, Rick Tymoc and Greg Kuprianiak for preparing the food, and Walter Nowak for supervising everything.

Our Interactive Reader’s Service

On Sunday, July 26, 2009, we selected to have a Reader’s Service in the traditions of a Mission Parish.  Sub-Deacon Michael Boyar led 34+ the Faithful in attendance through the Obednitza, which incorporated many of our children reading the variable parts during the service.

.

Sasha, Claudia and Fernanda especially enjoyed using the microphone when reading their Troparians, while the boys read their Kontakions like professionals.

.

It is truly amazing how a simple service like this can touch so many people – Everyone came away feeling the Holy Spirit.

Election Day in Detroit

On Tuesday, August 4, 2009, the City of Detroit held a Primary Election to narrow the balloting for Mayor and City Council in November, and we were selected to host 4 Precincts in the Ss Peter and Paul Cultural Center.

.

Many people came to our facility for the very first time to cast their ballots and see our beautiful facility.  Sub-Deacon Michael Boyar was on hand the entire day to serve refreshments and guided many personal tours of the hall and the church to those interested.

.

Many were impressed and took literature.  We have seen some guests at church, and have taken some deposits for the hall.  It was a wonderful day for us.

THE AUGUST FAMILY DINNER IN TIME WITH THE DORMITION

The  August Family Dinner was on Sunday, August 16. 2009 after the Divine Liturgy, and the special blessing of the flowers and herbs.  Although she was still not feeling well Mrs Jennie Mich and her family sponsored the wonderful meal.

The menu was absolutely delicious with the main course of Beef Stroganoff (made from a secret Russian recipe) served over a choice of mashed potatoes or egg noodles.  Everyone enjoyed a french style cut green bean and the tossed salad went quickly.  The dessert featured a scoop of ice cream with cherries on top.

Many thanks to Tim Mitrofanov and Ruth Clark for working very hard to get the luncheon ready, but most of all, please remember Jennie and her family in your prayers - It will be great to see you in church again very soon!

OUR SEPTEMBER DINNER: FROM RUSSIA – MADE IN MICHIGAN

Our September Family Dinner was a hosted by the Brewer Family.  Deveran, Vera, and their son, Andy followed a Russian theme during harvest, but all products and decorations were Made in Michigan.  They really put out a nice spread.

.

The menu included a Beet Soup (Borscht) to start with, and Cabbage Rolls (Goloptsi) and Pierogies as the main course. They served a cold Pasta Salad, Peas and several variations of Garlic and Peppers homemade from their farm and using Deveran’s secret recipes.  For dessert, they brought out a beautiful carrot cake, and served Faygo pop and Apple Cider.

.

The Fall Harvest theme was completed with several decorations and much of that was edible, too.  They wanted to do something really special for everyone, and they succeeded.  Our guests really enjoyed it.

.

Please pray for them, and their father, Nicholas Reswow, who is recuperating at home from his surgery.

MOVIE MANIA WAS A HUGE SUCCESS
After last year's success with the Movie Mania Raffle and Dinner, Victor and Christine planned a second annual on October 25, 2009, in conjuction with our Monthly Family Dinner.
 .
Ticket Sales for the various prizes were brisk, and the prizes were plentiful.  Special Congratulations are in order to Sonia Knapp, who won the special Grand Prize - a portable DVD Player, while Peter Boyar picked up honors of winning the most prizes (which he did share with his grand and great grand daughters.
.
As far as the menu for this informal Family Dinner event went, Victor provided 14 different  pizzas, while Christine prepared several salads, desserts and candies.  The beverages were served at the bar, as we celebrated in the First Class surroundings of the Upper Banquet Hall.  Of course, there was no charge for the event, but a free will basket was out, and everyone was very generous.

OUR FOUNDER'S DAY BANQUET CELEBRATION

In celebration of the 102nd Anniversary of Ss Peter and Paul (and to acknowledge the hard work in the first year of our rebuilding), Archbishop JOB was here for an exciting weekend on November 15, 2009, AND IT WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL!!!
.
On Saturday Evening, Vladyka led a Great Vespers followed by a small reception in the School Building, and he was brought up to date on the status of the parish.
.
Of course it was Good News!
.
We celebrated Divine Liturgy on Sunday followed by an informal brunch in the Ss Peter and Paul Cultural Center.  There were no tickets to buy or fixed costs for a fancy  banquet, and in the tradition of Monthly Family Dinners, everyone just had a nice time..
On this joyous occasion of this huge milestone for us - The Mother Church of Orthodoxy in Michigan - we all prayed hard in Thanksgiving for a Great Year and for a long and Prosperous Life Ahead.

FESTIVAL WAS HUGE SUCCESS

In recognition of the 10th year anniversary of the Head Start (Vistas Nuevas) program at our facility, we celebrated with a "Neighborhood Multi-Cultural Family Festival" on Saturday October 3, 2009 (from 11am-5pm) on our grounds.

This was a combined cooperative effort between the Cathedral and the School, and was open to the neighborhood as well as the entire Orthodox Community.

We had about 500 guests come and visit us (in only 6 hours).  All generations of many cultures of people enjoyed activities (including bounce houses, a petting zoo, pony rides, music and dancing, an authentic Mexican children dance group performance, face painting, balloons, different raffles and drawings), and a special appearance by PAWS - mascot of the Detroit Tigers.

There was wonderful food served, tremendous attention at our huge Bake Sale tables, and with more than 70 items available, our 10 cent Penny Social style raffle drew a lot of people into the lower level of our Banquet Hall.  In the meanwhile, several local non-profit organizations came with representatives and/or literature - including our own Orthodox Christian Women (OCW) to help local families solve any of their personal or family issues (IE: drinking/drug abuse, homelessness for families, teens and men, job referrals, medical needs, etc) filled the Main Banquet Hall upstairs.  We also brought in the Smoke House (which is a Winnebago-style trailer that has non-toxic smake pumped in (on cue) to teach young ones how to escape a fire) by the Detroit Fire Department.

We had 6 Orthodox people on-hand providing tours and answering questions about Orthodoxy, inside our Cathedral building - in 3 Languages! (English, Spanish, and Russian), and serveral items that were placed on consignment to us from Pascha Bookstore which we displayed and made available for purchase as people exited from the church into the church school - where members of Vistas Nuevas Head Start stood by to tour people through our school building and explain their programs.

Although we placed a high expecation for the event and our people to support this with labor and love, this event - by far - surpassed everything that we had hoped for.

Fact:  The Vistas Nuevas Head Start Program started this school year with pre-enrollment from last year, which realized about 140 neighborhood children benefitting from this wonderful program at our facility alone.
